spendingRESPONSIBLE SPENDING

Every dollar the government spends, is one less dollar in your pocket, your neighbor’s pocket or the pocket of the job creators in your community. Whenever policymakers decide to spend on a new program, decline to eliminate waste in existing programs or venture to a “conference” in sunny California, they should be mindful of this fact.

Spending should be limited to only core functions of government. It should not be used to favor the politically connected or to compete against private business. Policymakers should first and foremost be concerned with the protection of all taxpayers.

LIMIT SPENDING TO CORE FUNCTIONS.

IT IS NOT THE JOB OF GOVERNMENT TO FIX EVERY SOCIETAL PROBLEM, REAL OR PERCEIVED. WHEN GOVERNMENT ASSUMES THE ROLE OF “PROBLEM SOLVER IN CHIEF,” IT NATURALLY INFRINGES ON THE RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS OF ITS CITIZENS AND OFTEN TIMES CREATES LARGER PROBLEMS IN THE PROCESS.

MISSISSIPPI WILL SEE MUCH GREATER ECONOMIC GROWTH AND PROSPERITY IF IT ALLOWS ITS PEOPLE TO KEEP AND SPEND WHAT IS ALREADY THEIRS, WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY REDUCING THE SIZE AND SCOPE OF GOVERNMENT.

PROTECT TAXPAYERS.

POLICYMAKERS SHOULD ACTIVELY WORK TO PROTECT TAXPAYERS FROM RISKY SPENDING, INCLUDING LONG TERM DEBT OBLIGATIONS. DESPITE HAVING A “BALANCED BUDGET” REQUIREMENT, MISSISSIPPI CARRIES LONG-TERM BOND INDEBTEDNESS OF ALMOST $5.4 BILLION WITH AN UNFUNDED STATE PENSION LIABILITY OF ALMOST $15.5 BILLION.

OUR LEADERS SHOULD BE WORKING ON WAYS TO ACTIVELY REDUCE DEBT AND TO REFORM OUR STATE PENSION SYSTEM IN A WAY THAT BOTH HONORS ESSENTIAL PROMISES AND PROTECTS TAXPAYERS FROM OUT OF CONTROL PENSION LIABILITY MOVING FORWARD.

STOP PICKING WINNERS AND LOSERS.

TAXPAYER DOLLARS SHOULD NOT BE USED TO DIRECTLY INVEST IN PRIVATE COMPANIES OR INDUSTRIES. IT’S NOT FAIR THAT CITIZENS BEAR ALL OF THE RISK FOR DEALS LIKE THE MISSISSIPPI BEEF PLANT, KIOR AND TWIN CREEKS. IT’S ALSO NOT FAIR TO THOSE COMPANIES OR INDUSTRIES THAT ARE NOT AS WELL-CONNECTED. IT PUTS THEM AT A DISADVANTAGE AND DISTORTS THE NATURAL MARKET.

THESE PROJECTS ALSO RAISE THE LIKELIHOOD OF CORRUPTION IN GOVERNMENT, AS POLITICAL FAVORS MIGHT BE BOUGHT AT THE EXPENSE OF THE TAXPAYER.
